My last job as a full-time magazine editor was the hardest of my career. My twins were 8 years old; I was writing two, sometimes three, stories a day; and my totally unmanageable inbox overflowed with more than 250 pitches a day.

99% of them went to my delete folder. 1% turned into published articles.

In January 2021, I started working with a personal trainer for the first time in my life. We did HIIT workouts two early mornings a week in the park. Rain, shine, motivated or not, she pushed me so far beyond anything I thought I could ever do. My then 53-year-old body was transforming into something far stronger than I'd ever imagined. Today, I no longer pay for a trainer. Here's why: I learned how to become MY OWN trainer. I know how to get myself into the gym (AKA my garage) five times a week. I know how far to push myself. I know when to grab a 7-pound weight, when to use a 10-pounder, and when to skip a weight altogether to avoid injury. Total cost? Nothing. Thank you Anna!

It took two nights, my lost temper and many tries

It took two nights, my lost temper and many tries to get this year’s family Christmas photo. Yes, I’m grabbing the dog’s neck a little too enthusiastically. The kids refused to play ball with the matching pajama concept. And the once beautiful RH chair that has morphed into a muddy dog bed made it into frame.

Here’s why it’s a big win: We did it.

Portraits are NEVER convenient, usually miserable and completely critical - whether you’re looking to capture a family moment that will never repeat in time or wanting to grow your business by revealing the “who” behind what you do.

Entirely worth the battle against everyone’s resistance. Most of all your own.
